New Cold Store Inaugurated to Bolster Farmers' Resilience!

In a significant development for the local agricultural community, the much-awaited operationalization of our third integrated cold store was inaugurated on 7th October 2023 at Gomchu; Khaling, Tashigang Dzongkhag providing farmers with a vital contingency plan to safeguard their produce and enhance profitability. Farmers in the east like Trashigang, Trashi Yangtse, Monggar and Lhuentse no longer have to worry about selling their farm produce at low prices now that they can store it in cold storage and sell it when the price is good. The new Cold Store, equipped with advanced technology can store produces, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products and also meat product ensuring longer shelf life and preserving the quality. This strategic move aims to address common challenges such as market fluctuations and post-harvest losses. The facility has a capacity of 300 metric tons with total of 13 chambers. It was funded by Government of India (GOI) and Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) with total of Nu. 57.55 Million. Moreover, the rent/charge for using the facility is minimal which comes to around Nu. 4,745 to Nu. 8,435 depending on the chamber and its capacity while electricity consumption shall be borne by respective lessees. The inauguration ceremony was attended by CEO, FCBL along with the prominent members of the agricultural community, local leaders, and stakeholders who expressed their optimism about the positive impact this facility will have on the region's farming landscape. The establishment of the Cold Store represents a significant step forward in ensuring food security and bolstering the livelihoods of local farmers. It underscores the commitment of the community to support its agricultural backbone in times of uncertainty
