Locally Produced Fine Khamtey Rice Arriving Soon at FCBL Outlets

The Food Corporation of Bhutan Limited (FCBL) is pleased to share the arrival of a fresh batch of premium Khamtey rice, an indigenous and highly sought-after variety cultivated in the fertile southern foothills of Phuntshothang and Pemathang, Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag. Known for its distinct aroma, rich nutritional value, and exquisite taste, Khamtey rice is often compared to Basmati for its fragrant qualities, though it offers a unique texture and flavor of its own. A total of 12 metric tons of freshly harvested Khamtey rice, packed in convenient 5kg bags, has been dispatched and is en route to FCBL warehouses. Consumers will soon be able to purchase this premium rice from FCBL sales outlets in Phuentsholing and Thimphu. This initiative is part of an ongoing collaboration between FCBL and the Farm Machinery Corporation Limited (FMCL). Under this partnership, FMCL oversees the production and aggregation, while FCBL focuses on value addition and distribution to the consumers. Last year, FCBL successfully marketed 17 metric tons of Khamtey rice. Building on this success, the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FCBL and FMCL has expanded the supply to 55 metric tons this year to meet the growing consumer demand. Additionally, four more premium rice varieties: Yusi Kaap, Samtenling Ray Kaap 3, Tanseri, and Ngabja, will soon be made available in the market. Through this initiative, both FCBL and FMCL aim to establish a sustainable collaboration that strengthens both the production and distribution for our local agricultural produce, while simultaneously empowering our farming communities and contributing to the national economic growth.
